SUMMARY:PastForward Ensemble : historical recording methods - ZAMUS
DESCRIPTION:PastForward Ensemble\, under the direction of Shunske Sato\, is participating in an experimental recording session exploring the sonic ideals of early orchestral recordings. By reconstructing studio conditions from the early 20th century\, the project reveals how musicians responded to the technical and aesthetic demands of earlier recordings. Historical recording techniques are being employed in collaboration with Duncan Miller (Vulcan Records) and Dr. Inja Stanovic (University of Surrey). This will result in a newly cut 78 rpm shellac record. The six-month research project investigates questions of ensemble balance\, interpretation\, and the influence of recording technology on orchestral sound. The recording will feature an arrangement of Claude Debussy’s L’après-midi d’un faune (1894)\, conducted by Shunske Sato. This arrangement for koto and orchestra will also be performed on May 22nd at the ZAMUS early music festival.
